Claudia Tremblay came from Quebec, Canada, to Guatemala in 1998. She was sent by CECI, a Canadian NGO to work in the Cuchumatanes mountain range in northern Guatemala. While there, she worked on planting medicinal gardens alongside the women who had fled the country during the war and were now starting new communities.
A fascination quickly developed and she realized that she had to paint the beautiful, hard working women of the Maya highlands. Without formal training in art, she dedicated herself to painting, trying day after day to capture the magic and melancholic depth of the Mayan people and their land. She remains in Guatemala living and painting full time in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.
